[ LOCAL ARTIST OF THE MONTH ] August/September 2009

Our Talent of the Month was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Syed Shahadat immigrated to Toronto in 1996. With Canada’s dynamic society, natural beauty and multi-culturalism, Shahadat believed that Canada will give him and his family a better life. For the past several years, Artist Shahadat have been running Bindu Fine art & crafts – studio gallery, representing many Canadian – Bangladeshi artists. He also offers studio lessons in visual art (ceramic, drawing, paintings etc) for all ages.

Shaadat studied at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka where he completed his pre-degree (drawing and painting), and Bachelor of Fine Arts & Master of Fine Arts (ceramics). He also went to study English-ceramics at Lowestoft College, Suffolk, England, where he earned his East Anglican Diploma in Ceramic Design with a distinction. He is a certified Industrial ceramics & licensed designer crafts man. He also attended artist-in- residency program (ceramics) at Shigaraki Cultural Park in Shiga, Japan and at the Banff Center for the Arts in Banff, Canada.

Shahadat gets his inspiration from the natural beauty of his environment. However, some of his artworks are influenced by good memories. Most of his artworks (paintings and ceramics) are abstract expressionistic manner. He’s had over twelve solo and group shows throughout Bangladesh, England, Japan, and Canada. He was the recipient of the best experimental class award during his Masters degree at University of Dhaka and Best National Craftsmanship award in ceramics by the Design Centre in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

His teaching experience comes from working with children and adults during his work as a teacher at the Aga Khan International School, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Things could sometimes be tough in the studio, if you are an artist but Shahadat says,

Never give up, keep at it instead and be guided from within. Believe in your dreams, without them there is no art”.
